Tips for Cleaning Your Garbage Disposal

A garbage disposal is an incredibly convenient addition to any kitchen, helping to keep food waste from clogging up your drain and reducing the amount of waste you produce. However, over time, food particles and other debris can build up in the appliance, leading to unpleasant odors, clogs, and even damage to the unit. That's why it's important to clean your garbage disposal regularly. Fortunately, cleaning your garbage disposal is a fairly simple process. Here are the 5 steps to follow:

Step 1: Clean Your Sink

The first step towards cleaning your garbage disposal is to clean the sink thoroughly, paying special attention to any areas with grime buildup or stains. Apply a cleaning solution and use a scrub brush or sponge to scrub the sink, and rinse it with hot water.

Step 2: Clean the Splash Guard

A splash guard is a piece of rubber or plastic that sits on top of the garbage disposal unit and covers the opening where food waste goes into the unit. This component of your garbage disposal can get dirty quickly, as it is responsible for preventing food particles and debris from splashing back up into the sink and onto the counter. If the splash is removable, remove it and use a clean cloth or sponge to wipe it down thoroughly. Soak the splash guard in a mixture of warm water and white vinegar for a couple of minutes to disinfect it. Thereafter, rinse the splash guard thoroughly with hot water and dry it with a clean towel.

Step 3: Use Ice, Baking Soda and Vinegar to Clean the Blade and Chamber

Pour a few handfuls of ice cubes into the unit, and then pour a cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by a cup of white vinegar. Turn on the unit on, and let it run for a few seconds with the water turned on. This will help to loosen and break up any built-up grime or food particles, and the cold water will help flush them down the drain.

Step 4: Grind Up Lemon Peels

Cut up 1 or 2 lemons into small pieces and grind them in the unit with the water turned on. The lemon peels will leave behind a pleasantly fruity scent.

Step 5: Clean the Inside of the Unit

Apply a few drops of a cleaning solution to the disposal and use a soft-bristled brush to scrub the inside of the unit. Run hot water for a few minutes down the drain to rinse away any remaining debris. So there you have it. These are the simple steps to follow to clean your garbage disposal.
