How to Unclog a Toilet Without a Plunger

When your toilet is clogged and you don’t have a plunger, it’s time to get creative. Let’s walk you through a few easy tricks you can try to unclog a toilet without a plunger.

Use Baking Soda and Vinegar

If the methods we’ve highlighted above do not work, try using a combination of baking soda and vinegar. The combination of baking soda and vinegar has the power to cut through minor clogs caused by soap, hair, scum, grease, and organic matter.

Here are the steps to follow to unclog a toilet using baking soda and vinegar:

  • Step 1: If the toilet bowl is filled to the brim, scoop out some of the water.
  • Step 2: Pour about ½ cup of baking soda into the toilet bowl.
  • Step 3: Pour one cup of vinegar into the toilet to get a fizzy chemical reaction.
  • Step 4: Let it soak for about 20 minutes, and then follow up with some hot water and see if it drains. If the water drains, the blockage has cleared, and you can flush it as normal.

Use a Toilet Snake

When none of the methods we’ve already discussed seem to clear the clog, a toilet snake can be your saving grace. You can purchase a toilet snake at your local home improvement store. This tool brings a more aggressive approach to clearing clogs as it consists of a long, flexible cable that can extend deep into the toilet drain.

Here are the steps to follow to clear a toilet clog using a toilet snake:

  • Step 1: Insert the snake into the drain and carefully guide the end into the toilet drain.
  • Step 2: Maintain a firm grip on the handle and rotate the handle in a clockwise direction to maneuver the snake down into the drain.
  • Step 3: If you feel resistance on the cable, it likely means you’ve reached the clog in the drain.
  • Step 4: Slowly retract the cable by cranking the handle counterclockwise to either break up or pull out the clog.
  • Step 5: Once you’ve removed the clog, flush the toilet to check if it’s draining normally once again.
  • Step 6: If the clog is not cleared after the first attempt, you may need to repeat the process multiple times. It may take a few attempts to completely clear the clog.

Contact a Professional Plumber for Clogged Toilet Repair

If all else fails, it’s advisable to seek the help of a reliable plumber. Some toilet clogs can be challenging to clear, especially if they are severe or composed of hardened material. In such cases, the techniques we’ve highlighted above may not be enough to dislodge the clog. Professional plumbers have the expertise and specialized tools, such as high-pressure water jetting equipment and video inspection equipment, to diagnose and tackle even the most challenging toilet clogs.
